Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some formidable chess. The real improvement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
